Rohit Sharma’s Unexpected Call: Igniting Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Spectacular Rise in Test Cricket
Yashasvi Jaisal’s test career has gotten off to an incredible start. He has amassed 861 runs in just seven innings for India, including two double-hundreds, a century, and two additional fifty-score performances. Over half of those runs were scored in the current home series against England, when they collected 545 runs over six innings, including both of those double tons. In the second Test in Vizag, he scored 209, and in the third Test in Rajkot, he scored an undefeated 214. Both tests were decisively won by India. World cricket was enthralled with the left-hander’s remarkable run in the format thus far, but Jwala Singh, Yashasvi’s childhood coach, disclosed that it all began with an unexpected call from India captain Rohit Sharma.
Addressing India When Singh was questioned about Yashasvi and Rohit starting for India today, one day after the home team’s historic victory over England by 434 runs in the third Test, he revealed details of a phone call the young player had received nearly five years ago while playing for the Mumbai state team. Singh said that Rohit called a Mumbai player’s phone and demanded to speak with Yashasvi. Then, the current captain of India informed him that he was destined to play for the country.
“Rohit, who plays for Mumbai, is an excellent player. I recall Yashasvi telling me a story one day. At the time, he was a Mumbai player. Thus, Rohit requested to speak with Yashasvi over a teammate’s phone call. It was perhaps four or five years ago. “You are meant to be here where I am right now,” he said to Yashasvi. Then he gave me a quick call to let me know about the call. He was giddy with anticipation. There is that degree of ease now that Rohit is his opening partner and captain, Singh recalled.

In just 13 innings, Rohit and Yashasvi have combined to bat for 788 runs, including two-century partnerships. Over the previous few weeks, Yashasvi has received acclaim for his superb batting, but the Indian captain hasn’t said much about the youngster. “I’ve talked about him a lot. People outside the locker room have undoubtedly also been discussing him. I’d rather not talk about him too much and be cool about him. In the Sunday post-match presentation, Rohit remarked, “He’s started his career on a high.”
