Mumbai Boy Yashasvi Jaiswal Grilled on Live TV: ‘Can’t You Score Centuries Against Others?
IPL 2024 has seen the arrival of Yashasvi Jaiswal. The Indian Premier League’s second-century batsman for the Rajasthan Royals crushed the Mumbai Indians on Monday night, capping a run of poor performances. Of note, Jaiswal’s two hundred came against MI; at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, RR easily defeated MI’s target of 180 overs in 18.4 overs. He scored 124 off 62 balls last year and 104 off 60 balls yesterday. Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, and Sanju Samson, the captain, all made valuable contributions. Piyush Chawla took Buttler for 35 runs, but Jaiswal and Samson added an undefeated partnership of 109 runs to help RR win. Sandeep Sharma beat Jaiswal for the Player of the Match title despite the latter’s fantastic 5/18 period. However, Jaiswal’s timely knock puts him back in the running to make the Indian team for the T20 World Cup.
A question that would have been on the minds of every Mumbaikar was posed to Jaiswal by Sunil Gavaskar during his post-match interview, following his magnificent century. Gavaskar couldn’t help but ask Mumbai-born Jaiswal what it is about the Mumbai Indians that always seems to bring out the best in him, given his impressive record against the five-time champions, MI. This is how the exchange unfolded. Gavaskar: “Meet Ashish! Here’s Sunil. You’re up against the Mumbai Indians for the second century. You’re a Mumbai boy, too. How come you are scoring these hundreds against them? Don’t you think you could beat them by hundreds? Jaiswal: “Not a thing. Simply put, I believe I’m attempting to do what I do best. There are good days and bad days. I was only having fun. That’s it. There was nothing on my mind.
The importance of Jaiswal’s knock
But despite his first meaningful innings, Jaiswal hasn’t performed well enough to be among the top 10 run scorers in the 2017 IPL. With 225 runs from 8 matches, he is currently ranked 22 and well behind in the standings. Jaiswal’s comeback to form, however, is encouraging for both RR and the Indian squad. Jaiswal, the standout performer in the Test series against England with over 700 runs, has been selected to be Rohit Sharma’s partner for India in the T20 World Cup. Although he has refuted rumors that Virat Kohli may be the favorite, Yashasvi’s criticism is sure to cause selectors some issues.

After hugging the former MI captain after the game, Jaiswal, who has been very high on Rohit and his captaincy, proved that he was right. A few images and videos from before the game showed how much Jaiswal admired Rohit, and this gesture made after the game demonstrates the impact the India captain has had on young people, including Jaiswal. MI are currently mired in seventh place with six points from eight games, while the Royals’ commanding nine-wicket victory solidifies their lead at the top of the points table.
