Sensational Sophie Leads RCB to Maiden WPL Title, Outclassing Lanning’s DC

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 final between Meg Lanning and Co. and Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday saw the in-form Delhi Capitals (DC) hoping for a second consecutive victory. In the eliminator at the same location, RCB defeated the reigning champion Mumbai Indians (MI) to schedule a date with the Delhi Capitals, the hosts. The just-finished summit match between the Delhi Capitals, the runners-up in the inaugural season, and RCB put their four-match winning streak against them on the line.

After an outstanding start against RCB in the WPL final, DC lost the plot after winning the toss and choosing to bat first. In the first 43 balls of the innings, the host team, Delhi, was 64 for no loss. But when Australia’s Sophie Molineux, a left-arm spinner, took three wickets in an over, the Delhi Capitals’ fortunes were reversed. On the opening ball of the seventh over, RCB’s Sophie broke the stalemate by hitting the jackpot shot of Shafali Verma (44).

She gave superstar Jemimah Rodrigues a golden duck after a ball. Alice Capsey of DC also repeated Rodrigues’s achievement, getting swept clean by Molineux on the opening ball. Off-spinner Shreyanka Patil took four wickets and let up just 12 runs in the middle and late overs, turning the match into a low-scoring contest. Asha Sobhana contributed two wickets to support Patil (4) and Molineux (3), as DC was dismissed for 113 in 18.3 overs.

Captain Mandhana (31) and Sophie Devine put together a 49-run partnership for the first wicket to lead RCB’s run chase in the championship. In the 14th over, Minnu Mani denied Mandhana’s attempt to achieve a match-winning half-century, while Shikha Pandey bowled Devine for 32 off 27 balls. Australian players Ellyse Perry and Richa Ghosh, who are both undefeated, helped the Royals defeat DC by eight wickets in the championship match.
