Jay Shah Mentions Hardik Pandya as Potential Next India Captain; Confirms Kohli and Rohit for Champions Trophy

Virat Kohli declared his retirement from the format shortly after India defeated South Africa in the T20 World Cup in Barbados on Saturday, ending their 11-year wait for an ICC title and passing the baton to the upcoming generation. Soon after, Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, did the same, and then Ravindra Jadeja. What does that mean for Team India now? Is their standing in the ODI setup with the Champions Trophy in play jeopardized by that decision? BCCI secretary Jay Shah responds, “No.” In addition to their contributions to the T20I format, Kohli and Rohit were commended by Shah for leading India to their second T20 World Cup and first world championship since 2011.

“The skipper was the same here in Barbados as it was last year. Australia played better in the 2023 final, so we won all the other games. We played better and worked much harder this time to win the championship,” he stated on Monday. Experience matters when comparing teams. Virat to Rohit, they were all really good. Experience counts for a lot, and you can’t really experiment too much during the World Cup. We saw yesterday that a good player knows when to give up on the game. When you compare Rohit’s strike rate to many young players, it is superior.

Shah is certain that India will win both the Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship Trophy in 2019 after the team wins its first ICC title in eleven years. Rohit and Kohli, for example, are expected to be around for the longer forms. Our goal is to win the Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship final with the way this team is developing. A comparable team will be participating there. Seniors are expected to attend,” Shah promised.

Is Rohit the next captain of India? was another question raised by his announcement of his retirement from the Twenty20 International format. After leading India in the T20I format for the past two years in Rohit’s place, the all-rounder has emerged as the frontrunner, despite names like Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah all making waves.

Though Shah did mention the all-rounder in his response to the question about Hardik possibly becoming the next captain of India, he also stated that the selectors have the last say in the matter. We will declare the captain after consulting with the selectors, who will make the final decision. You raised concerns regarding Hardik’s form, but he showed his abilities, and we, along with the selectors, had faith in him,” he replied.
