Virat Kohli Becomes Fourth Indian Cricketer to Reach 9000 Test Runs
Virat Kohli became the fourth Indian cricket player to reach the 9000-run mark in Test cricket on the third day of the opening Test match between India and New Zealand at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. After a duck in the first inning, Kohli recovered to score 53 runs, joining the select few who have scored more than 9000 runs in Test matches: Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.
India’s top Test run-scorer, Sachin Tendulkar, retired from international cricket in 2013, although he still scored 15,921 runs in 200 games. With 13,265 runs in 163 tests, Dravid comes in second, and Gavaskar scored 10,122 runs in 125 tests. The slowest of these superstars, Kohli took 197 innings to reach the 9000-run milestone, but he is still establishing himself as one of India’s best batsmen.
Kohli was exclusively beneath India’s main three Trial scorers with 8947 runs in 115 Test matches before this game. By reaching this milestone, he also hopes to accomplish another goal: he will become the third Indian batter to reach 1000 Test runs against New Zealand, behind Tendulkar and Dravid. To become a member of this select club, Kohli needs to score 134 more runs than his current total of 866 runs versus the Black Caps in 11 games. Tendulkar has scored 1595 runs, Sehwag has scored 883, and Cheteshwar Pujara has scored 867. David is the Indian batsman with the most Test runs against New Zealand, with 1659.

Only once in 16 games across all formats this year has Kohli reached the 50-run milestone, indicating his poor form in 2024. With India playing New Zealand at home, Kohli will be quick to get once more into the structure and make a major commitment to a series triumph under Rohit Sharma’s initiative. During the Bangladesh Test series, Kohli left a mark on the world by being the quickest batsman to accomplish 27,000 international runs in only 594 innings.
