It takes a village to grow a champion, and after her convincing semifinal victory over Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba, Vinesh Phogat made contact with the one who reared her. Phogat defeated Guzman, the defending Pan-American champion, 5-0, by outclassing and outmuscling the Cuban. Phogat’s victory guaranteed India another medal in their Paris 2024 quest and made history as the first female wrestler from India to compete in an Olympic final.

Phogat couldn’t contain her emotions after her historic victory, so she was led to a stall where her parents and relatives were waiting for her via video chat. The Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who has been embroiled in a plethora of controversy in the past year, made history at the Paris Olympics when she defeated Japan’s Yui Susaki, the current world champion, in the first round of the women’s 50kg freestyle competition.

With Vinesh’s victory, Susaki, the top-seeded Japanese player who did not give up a single point on her way to her hold during the 2020 Tokyo Games, suffers her historic first defeat on international circuits. After dominating the current champion, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat advanced to the quarterfinals of the 50kg Women’s Freestyle competition in Paris, where she defeated Oksana Livach of Ukraine.

In order to guarantee her place in the quarterfinal, Phogat surgically defeated Livach 7–5, showcasing her experience and attention to detail. The top wrestler then put on an even more impressive display in the semifinals, defeating Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba 5-0 to guarantee her place in the Women’s 50kg Freestyle final.
