TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee Breaks Glass Bottle After Heated Exchange with BJP Leader During Waqf Bill Meeting
Kalyan Banerjee, a TMC lawmaker, injured himself during a heated confrontation with BJP leader Abhijit Gangopadhyay during Tuesday’s Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) hearing on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, by damaging a glass water bottle. The dispute is around a proposal that has been the focus of intense discussion between government and opposition party members.
Banerjee needed emergency first assistance after he slammed the bottle on the table during the discussion, inadvertently injuring his thumb and index finger. The TMC MP was led out for medical treatment by AAP leader Sanjay Singh and AIMIM head Asaduddin Owaisi. After the episode, the meeting, which was managed by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, was concluded.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which expects to execute changes in Waqf property administration, like digitization, more stringent audits, and transparency, was the subject of the JPC meeting. However, opposition members claimed the bill targeted the Muslim minority and voiced reservations about the consultative process. Kalyan Banerjee questioned the state’s legal recognition of Waqf, which was founded in Allah’s honor.

On the side of the action, the BJP asserted that it was essential for improving transparency and recovering Waqf properties that had been unlawfully occupied Until now, the JPC has held 15 sessions in Delhi and five in different areas to request criticism from local area pioneers, legitimate specialists, and government officials.
