Tirupati Temple Laddu Controversy: Allegations of Fish Oil and Beef Tallow Explained

Tirupati Temple Laddu Controversy: Allegations of Fish Oil and Beef Tallow Explained

A significant debate has recently revolved around the revered Tirupati laddu, which is served as prasad at the well-known Sri Venkateswara temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.

The problem started when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu shockingly claimed that, while his predecessor Jagan Mohan Reddy was in office, the laddus were being created with tampered components, such as fish oil and animal fats.

A contentious political and theological dispute has been ignited by this allegations, which the YSR Congress Party has vigorously denied.

The Origin of the Controversy

In a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislative party conference, Naidu said that during Jagan Mohan Reddy’s administration, animal fat and other inferior components were utilized to make laddus instead of pure ghee.

As word of Naidu’s allegations spread, Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh took to social networking platform X (previously Twitter) to voice his displeasure and denounce the suspected usage of animal fats in the temple’s hallowed prasad.

Laboratory Report Fuels Allegations

A lab study from the NDDB CALF (Centre for Analysis and Learning in Livestock & Food) was released to the public in support of Naidu’s allegations.

The study, dated July 16, 2024, mentioned that the ghee used to make Tirupati laddus contained fish oil, lard, and bull tallow.

The report’s releaseer, TDP leader Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy, referred to the reported adulteration as a serious sin and called it a “affront” to Hindu religious sensitivities.

The Significance of the Tirupati Laddu

A 300-year-old custom, Tirupati laddu is more than just a candy. For millions of devotees, it is considered sacrosanct.

Strict instructions and quality ingredients like ghee, cashew nuts, raisins, and cardamom are used to produce the laddus.

The temple’s managing body, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), takes considerable care to guarantee the laddu’s quality and cleanliness.

This entails subjecting ingredients—especially ghee, which is examined for rancidity, moisture content, and aroma—to stringent testing.

Many Hindus are horrified to learn that the ghee used for prasad contained animal fats, such as beef tallow and lard, since many Hindus hold cows in high regard and believe that eating anything derived from cows is sacrilegious.

YSR Congress Denies Claims

All claims have been refuted by the YSR Congress Party, which has labeled them as politically motivated. Senior YSR Congressman and former TTD chairman YV Subba Reddy refuted Naidu’s charges, saying the Andhra chief minister was “stooping to any level for political gain.” Reddy also questioned Naidu’s veracity, asking him to swear before the god to prove his sincerity.

To counter Naidu’s accusations, the YSR Congress released a video showing Syamala Rao, the IAS official who was chosen by Naidu to be the TTD executive officer, acknowledging that some batches of ghee used in the laddus were tainted with vegetable fats rather than animal fats. The party went on to accuse Naidu of purposefully politicizing the matter in order to harm their standing.

Call for an Inquiry

The Andhra Pradesh Congress president, YS Sharmila, has demanded an unbiased inquiry to find the truth as the situation heats up.

Sharmila expressed worry that Naidu’s assertions would undermine the faith of Lord Venkateswara, who is revered by millions of Hindus. She called for a CBI probe or a high-level investigation to confirm if animal fat was really utilized in the prasad.

The Way Forward

The controversy surrounding the Tirupati laddu is not going away, even as tensions between the TDP and the YSR Congress continue to escalate.

A clear decision to the matter is eagerly awaited, since religious feelings are running hot. For the time being, supporters of both political parties continue to argue over the matter, hoping for clarification and the maintenance of the sanctity of their beloved Prasad.
