India Cricketers Don ‘Champions’ Jersey to Meet PM Narendra Modi
The cricketers from India who won the T20 World Cup met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday wearing a unique “champions” shirt. Specifically tailored for Team India’s meeting with PM Modi, the orange and blue jersey features the word ‘Champions’ printed in the middle. The only variation was the word “champions” on their chests; otherwise, it was the same uniform that the Indian team wore during the World Cup in the USA and Caribbean Islands. Sanju Samson, an Indian wicketkeeper-batter who was a member of the 15-man team but did not get to play in any matches during the tournament, revealed the first image of the exclusive jersey on social media.
Remarkably, the family members remained in the hotel while the cricket players, coaches, and senior BCCI executives went to meet the PM. The team captained by Rohit Sharma arrived in New Delhi early on Thursday morning, having been stranded on the Caribbean islands since defeating South Africa by seven runs in the Barbados final on June 29. Hurricane Beryl caused the island to be closed for two days, making it impossible for the Indian players to depart Barbados. The BCCI moved quickly to organize a special charter flight to return about 70 Indian players, coaches, families, board members, and sports media home as soon as the airport was functioning.
Braving bad weather to wait outside the airport for the winning team, who defeated South Africa by seven runs in the final in Bridgetown on Saturday of last week, hundreds of supporters waved the national flag and carried signs thanking their favourite team. In the Indira Gandhi International Airport, fans cheered loudly while holding up pictures of star batsman Virat Kohli, captain Rohit Sharma, and departing head coach Rahul Dravid. Despite the heavy security in place to keep the crowd under control, the atmosphere remained upbeat. The players were taken to the ITC Maurya Sheraton by two buses that were parked outside the T3 Terminal. There, they were welcomed by traditional Bhangra dancers and dhol players.
The majority of them, including all-rounder Hardik Pandya, skipper Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rishabh Pant, gave the gathering dancers a once-in-a-lifetime experience by shaking hands. The players unwrapped a cake that had been kept ready for them, let their hair down, shook hands with everyone who wished to, and moved inside their rooms, leaving even the on-duty security staff smiling. The anticipated media frenzy surrounded the entire event. After leaving for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s house a little while later, they began the busy schedule that would keep them busy all day. They acknowledged the eager fans by waving and grinning warmly, despite their weariness.

The most passionate among them in response to the applause was Suryakumar, who made the incredible catch of David Miller in the championship game that won the game. Pacer Mohammed Siraj sent flying kisses in the direction of the assembled fans as Pant, who made his comeback to international cricket at the recently finished event following a near-fatal car crash, saluted them. After India’s T20I campaign, Rohit and Player of the Final Kohli were among the last to leave the VIP exit. Before getting on the bus, Rohit held up the much-coveted trophy for the spectators to see. In response, Kohli acknowledged the support with a thumbs up.
