Supreme Court Asks TDP Government to ‘Keep God Out of Politics’ in Tirupati Laddu Controversy
The Andhra Pradesh government’s handling of the Tirupati Prasadam controversy has drawn criticism from the Supreme Court, which also questioned the need to contact the media in light of ambiguous claims that tampered ghee was used to make Tirumala laddus.
The court stressed the significance of keeping religious issues and political problems apart at a hearing on Monday. Judge BR Gavai said, emphasizing how delicate the subject is, “At least we expect Gods to be kept away from politics.”
In addressing the Andhra government’s attorney, the court pointed out that the ghee under consideration was a rejected sample, according to test results. Judge Gavai questioned senior attorney Siddharth Luthra about whether the laddus were made with non-compliant ghee. In response, Luthra stated that further inquiry was still ongoing.
So why was it necessary to go straight to the press? Justice Gavai continued, advising prudence in how the issue is conveyed to the public. “You need to respect religious sentiments,” he said. To verify if tainted ghee was actually used in the Prasadam, the Supreme Court also asked for proof.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said earlier this month that pig fat was being used in the ancient temple’s production of the hallowed prasadam, sparking the controversy around the Tirupati laddus. According to him, laddus were made using tainted ghee when Jagan Mohan Reddy was in power.
A Special Investigation Team was established by the Andhra government to investigate the situation in response. Naidu was accused by Jagan Mohan Reddy of “blatantly lying” over the creation of Tirupati laddu prasadam, and the latter rejected both of his assertions.
Reddy said, “CM Chandrababu Naidu has used the Laddu problem in an attempt to refocus political attention. He is implying that the production of laddu prasadam involved the use of animal fat, casting doubt on Tirumala’s holiness and dignity. Is this appropriate? It is obvious that Chandrababu Naidu is lying about TTD Laddu Prasadam.”

The importance of preserving public confidence in the sacredness of religious contributions while simultaneously negotiating the intricate junction of religion and politics in the area is reflected in the Supreme Court’s investigation into the case.
