Sumedh Mudgalkar Reflects on His Journey as Lord Krishna: How Playing the Divine Role Transformed His Life

Ever since Sumedh Vasudev Mudgalkar became Lord Krishna in the TV serial RadhaKrishn, his life has taken a huge turn. As the entire country celebrated Krishna Janmashtami, the actor is heard sharing how the festival has turned into one of the most significant instances for him—with his fans claiming it to be his “second birthday.”

“On Janmashtami, I get hundreds of ‘Happy Birthday’ messages on Instagram, and it’s not uncommon for people to come and personally tell me, ‘aapke kaam mein hamein Shri Krishna dikhte hain’ (We see Lord Krishna in your work),” Sumedh shares, pointing to the overwhelming amount of love he has got from his audience. Because this role has undoubtedly attached him with fans in a way one could never think of.

Humorously confessing on the festival of Janmashtami, he wasn’t great in breaking the dahi handi that occurs. “It was all about failed attempts to break the dahi handi, as I was really bad at it. But there used to also be dance competitions around the same festive time, and I would participate in them. That gave me a lot of opportunities,” he reminisces.

Playing the role of Lord Krishna on screen for five years he terms it as “a blessing I was looking for.” However, it came with its own share of challenges. “The most challenging part was to do justice to the character. Lord Krishna is like an ocean, and you need to genuinely dive into the character and forget yourself for a while. Tt’s like swimming in bliss,” he explains. Before morphing into the character, Sumedh went to ISKCON Temple of Pune, where they informed him of the importance of the role he was taking up. He also read Osho’s book, Krishna: The Man and His Philosophy to understand the essence of Krishna’s demeanor. He puts it out there, “I had to know where it came from and had to fully understand it; not just pretend.”.

What Sumedh has done substantially through his portrayal is earned praises but also built a high connection with his viewers. He recollects a few touching experiences with his fans, which he feels are already very close to him—one in which a mother came out of depression by witnessing the show and the other case was of some disabler whose outlook toward life changed completely by seeing the show. “These experiences make me realize the impact that the role is having and the responsibility it carries,” he says.

Playing Lord Krishna has led to him undergoing some big personal life transitions as well. “In the process of playing Lord Krishna, I became a very soft person within. I still can’t fathom the changes that happened inside me, but the ones surrounding me feel I’ve improved by leaps as a person. I am better at dealing with situations, much more sensitive, and much kinder,” he reflects. Sumedh accepts that the name of Lord Krishna shall always be attached to his name and it is going to prove both on his career and conscience.
