Shubman Gill Eyes Permanent T20I Opener’s Role, Cites Challenge of Matching Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
As he embarks on a new chapter in his life as India’s captain for the Zimbabwe series, Shubman Gill will not want to emulate the feats of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gill, who was only in the USA as a traveling reserve after missing out on a spot in the T20 World Cup, will captain the team for the opening T20I against Zimbabwe. However, since Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the most recent World Champions, have retired, Gill wants to solidify his spot in the T20 XI. “In my opinion, Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai both started the World Cup as openers…Additionally, I opened in T20s. When asked what batting position he would want in the shortest format, Gill responded, “I think I will want to open in T20Is.”
Gill expressed his desire to follow his own objectives free from undue pressure, even as he considered matching the two greats, Rohit and Kohli. When asked how he intended to handle the weight of expectations, Gill responded, “I think pressure and expectations will always be there. It will be extremely challenging for me to reach or accomplish what Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai have accomplished. Each player has a personal objective that they hope to accomplish. That’s the strain. There is more pressure to go where others have gone “if you wish to do that,” he stated.
The twenty-four-year-old considered Rohit and Kohli to be young cricketers’ idols. There is pressure, of course. However, they are also legends and idols of Indian cricket because of what they have accomplished for the country. However, there is pressure to accomplish the goals we have set for the team and ourselves as players.” In the five-match T20I series, Gill confirmed that Abhishek Sharma, who was playing brilliantly for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024, will open the innings with him.
After Hardik Pandya took over as Mumbai Indians captain, Gill captained the Gujarat Titans during the Indian Premier League. Gill was relying heavily on that Zimbabwean experience.”I’ve learnt a lot of lessons when I captained my IPL squad for the first season. I got to know a lot more things about myself and a lot more things about the leadership perspective,” he remarked.
“I thought that the majority of the difficulties a captain has have to do with mentally preparing the boys. Everyone possesses the necessary skill set; the trick is to instill confidence in the other players so they can use that skill set on the field.” During the series against Zimbabwe, Gill remarked, the youthful Indian team will acquire a lot of experience and some much-needed exposure to international cricket.

“This team is very different from the one that participated in the World Cup, if you look at it. The team is made up mostly of young players, including me.Since many of the players haven’t played many games and some haven’t even made their debut, we just want to give them experience and a taste of what it’s like to play at the international level. “I think that is our aim for the series to give them more international exposure and experience,” the player said. Gill stated, “I think you guys have got a good T20 team,” in reference to Zimbabwe. Even our most recent one-day game, which we played in the one-dayers, ended up being really close. “We are aware that nothing will change. The difficulty for us is that the method you guys are going to attack us will be the same as any other country,” he said.
