Shantanu Maheshwari Reflects on Patriotism and Independence Day Celebrations

A few days ahead of the 78th Independence Day, in an exclusive photoshoot with HT City, actor-dancer Shantanu Maheshwari said, “There’s a different feeling when you hold the flag in your hands. It’s unmatched.”. Since 2015, when his dance crew, Desi Hoppers, became the winner of the World of Dance Championships in Los Angeles, Maheshwari has been flying high and raising the flag for India across various international platforms. Recently, he launched his upcoming international film, Love in Vietnam, at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. “It’s an unbelievable feeling, really, to represent your country on the global forefront. That opened up my mind to so much more.”.

Very special and memorable is the sharing of our culture and, of course, putting India in a place of pride,” he said.

Now, coming to Independence Day plans, Maheshwari revealed he would be working that day and prepping for some shoot. He said he definitely would attend the flag hoisting in his building, which he looks forward to every year. Not a big kite flying guy himself, but he will watch with his family how Independence Day parade goes. On being asked what independence means to him, Maheshwari reflected, “Independence is the freedom to think and express yourself. The kind of freedom which we enjoy in India is not there in every country.” He also mentioned that freedom fighter Bhagat Singh was always one of his heroes. “Bhagat Singh has been an inspiration for me since I was a child. I’ve read so much about what he did for India’s independence.

“It is very important that we remember the suffering our countrymen endured,” he expounded.

Maheshwari further went on to say that cinema, more specifically Indian cinema, has done its part in giving people an idea about the country’s freedom struggle. “Indian cinema has given the content that makes people realize what our history is all about. The bravery of our countrymen needs to be recognized and should come into more content. I would love to be a part of a patriotic project and playing a freedom fighter would be an absolute honor.”
