ED Raids Former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh Residence in Financial Misappropriation Case

ED officers on Friday carried out coordinated search operations at the residences of Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and three of his associates over alleged financial misappropriation at the institution, an officer said.

The raids are being conducted at Ghosh’s Beliaghata residence and two other places at Howrah and Subhasgram. All four are in CBI custody. The officer added, “We reached these places at about 6:15 am and started the searches.”

ED has registered an ECIR against Ghosh. This comes days after the Calcutta High Court, on August 23, transferred the investigation from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team to the CBI.

The court’s orders came on a petition by Dr. Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent of the hospital, who called upon the ED to investigate allegations of financial wrongdoing during Ghosh’s tenure.

Ghosh served as principal from February 2021 until September 2023. In October of this year, he was temporarily moved, but he was back on the job a month later.

Dr. Ali has also pointed out that the financial misappropriation might relate to the death of a doctor, hinting that the deceased may have known about the irregularity and probably threatened to expose them.
