Sam Altman Reveals Life-Changing Effects of Psychedelics in Mexico: “It Made Me Calm”
Sam Altman, the co-founder of OpenAI, recently talked about his own experiences with psychedelics on an episode of the podcast “Life in Seven Songs.”.
He said that taking them had changed his life more than almost anything else—they were “totally incredible.” Altman explained how, before trying psychedelics, he had always been very worried and never satisfied.
But after taking them, he became much less stressed as well as better at concentrating hard on long-term goals. “I would never have believed that something could make such a big difference,” he said, giving an example from a retreat in Mexico over the weekend. “If you told me it was going to happen, I’d have said, ‘No way!’ It’s totally unexpected, but it does work!”
Although Altman did not say which psychedelics he took, he noted experimenting with them at Burning Man—an experience that was life-altering, albeit milder and rarer than other trips he’s been on.

Last year Altman got talking about psychs online after making a post on X (formerly Twitter) that caught Elon Musk’s eye: “A lot of crazy stories start with too many amphetamines and end with not enough psychedelics,” he wrote at the time, underscoring further still the complicated conversation around drug use in tech.
