Saif Ali Khan Reflects on His ‘Angrez’ Image: ‘Raised as an Eastern Prince’ Despite Western Influences
While one knows that Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan has a fixed abode in Mumbai, he keeps visiting his ancestral home, Pataudi Palace, in Haryana. Being the son of late cricket legend Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, known as Tiger Pataudi, and the veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, Saif is deeply connected to his royal heritage.
In an interview with Rediff in 2013, Saif said how this ‘angrez’ image hampered his career.
He reflected on how his Western upbringing had once presented problems, saying, “In the initial stages of my career, the ‘angrez’ image did work against me. I was just too influenced by the West because of my education in a foreign land. But now I am more Indian in my thoughts. I started praying more and it is very peaceful. My manager got me this beautiful silk janamaz.” When questioned about his affinity for the West, more so London, Saif admitted his preference for India but acknowledged his enjoyment of the cleaner and much-across-the-table environments abroad. “Except for Mumbai, I don’t like any city beyond a point. Mumbai is a charming city with a lot of character but its infrastructure and weather can be challenging, ” he said.
Though I love living in Mumbai, I do appreciate the order and anonymity one finds outside India. Happily, I am not a confused desi.
