Rohit Sharma’s Struggle Against Part-Timer Padikkal Goes Viral: Fans Claim “Endgame”

A video that went viral showed India captain Rohit Sharma battling in the nets against part-time spinner Devdutt Padikkal ahead of the fourth Test match against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, raising more questions about the captain’s condition. Supporters called the video “embarrassing,” which heightened conversations about his difficulties.

Rohit Sharma’s Poor Run in Tests

Since joining the team in Adelaide during the second Test, Rohit has only scored 19 runs in three innings throughout the current series. His overall performance in Test cricket has been appalling; since September, he has amassed just 152 runs at an average of 11.69 in 13 innings, including just one half-century.

Rohit was spotted facing spinners in the nets beginning on December 26 in anticipation of the Melbourne Test. Alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, Padikkal, a part-time off-spinner who has only participated in one Test match in the series, bowled to the Indian captain. One particularly noteworthy instance was Padikkal defeating Rohit with a low delivery, which raised questions about the batter’s waning skill.

The video has sparked online discussion, with many fans speculating that Rohit could be nearing the end of his Test cricket career.

Speculation About Rohit’s Future

Sunil Gavaskar, a former captain of India, too commented on Rohit’s subpar play. After yet another lackluster showing in Brisbane, Gavaskar told ABC Sports that if Rohit doesn’t perform well in the last two games, he may resign as Test captain. “There is no doubt in my mind that Rohit will have the chance to participate in the next games. However, if he doesn’t score any runs at the end, I have a sense that he will make the decision himself,” Gavaskar remarked.

Following R Ashwin’s unannounced retirement, Cricbuzz recently published a story on a possible change within the Indian Test team, which fueled more conjecture. A more comprehensive team revamp was hinted at by the article, which said that additional senior players may declare their retirement prior to the next World Test Championship cycle. “The Indian team is expected to transform soon, but it is difficult to determine how much of this decision is planned, voluntary, or subtly influenced,” the article stated.

Is This the Endgame for Rohit Sharma?

Nothing is official, but if Rohit Sharma’s performance doesn’t improve in the next Melbourne and Sydney Test matches, there are rumors that he may retire like Ashwin. The Indian Test squad is about to enter a transitional era, and everyone will be watching to see if Rohit can make a difference.
