Robert Downey Jr. Returns to Marvel as Doctor Doom and Iron Man in New Avengers Films and Disneyland Attraction

After a little more than ten years as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Oscar-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. lines up for a grand comeback to the Marvel fold. The role he has been strictly keeping under wraps is none other than that of the iconic bad guy, Victor von Doom alias Doctor Doom, for two of the most highly anticipated films in the pipeline: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Additionally, he will be making his comeback as Iron Man in Disney’s upcoming attraction at the Avengers Campus in Disneyland.

As an example, during a recent interview over at The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Downey shared how these two returns to Marvel happened. He credits the real heavy lifting for the return to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Disney CEO Bob Iger. “Probably a year ago, because Feige and I have kept in touch,” Downey shared. “We’re pals. I’m pals with the Russo brothers. We have different business we’re in the middle of. I had this gut feeling that I wanted to go to Bob Iger. And I had an idea, outside of the cinematic universe, for how I could be of service to what’s going on in the parks and all their location-based energy.”

Downey told The Hollywood Reporter about one of the most important conversations with Feige, where his return was initially broached. At some point, Feige told me and Susan, ‘It just keeps occurring to me that if you were to come back …’ and Susan said, ‘Wait, wait, come back as what?’ And then we both realized, over time, that was another thing that just disproves any doubt anyone could ever have about that guy. And he brought up Victor von Doom, and I looked into the character, and I was like, Wow,” added Downey.

Breaking news that reaffirmed fans regarding Downey’s Marvel journey, far from over. Avengers: Doomsday will be released theatrically on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027. Lopez further added that a little while later, one would also have the experience of Downey’s Iron Man at Disneyland’s Avengers Campus.
