RG Kar Medical College Principal Resigns Amid Backlash Over Doctor’s Rape and Murder, Hospital Services Disrupted
The principal of government-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Prof (Dr) Sandip Ghosh, resigned on Monday morning amidst growing backlash over the horrific rape and murder of a doctor. He claimed that defamatory remarks against him were being posted on social media and stated that the victim was like his daughter, a postgraduate student in medicine. He emphasized that his decision to step down was made in the capacity of a grieving parent.
“I am getting defamed on social media. The deceased doctor was like my daughter. As a parent, I resign.I don’t want this to happen to anyone in the future,” Dr. Ghosh was quoted as saying by news agencies. In the continuing investigation, Kolkata police have summoned three junior doctors and one housekeeping staff member who were on duty the night of that fateful incident. The body of the deceased in semi-naked condition was found in the seminar hall of that particular hospital where she had gone to rest after having a meal with colleagues.
The first post-mortem report had some shocking details: bleeding from eyes, nose, and private parts, besides a broken neck and other injuries. The police arrested a man connected with the crime, although he was not an official employee at the hospital. Police officials said that after committing the offence, the accused went to his home and slept. Later, he tried to destroy the evidence by washing his clothes. Investigators found bloodstains on his shoes.
