Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag React to RCB WPL Victory; Virat Kohli’s Post Steals the Show

They didn’t weight a men’s team title drought, but for the heartbroken supporters who drove to New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday night and those who stayed up late at home to witness the historic occasion, it signified the end of sixteen years of pain and despair. In front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Smriti Mandhana-led team defeated the Delhi Capitals by eight wickets in the WPL 2024 final to win their first championship as a women’s team and as a franchise overall. Following the DC collapse to 113 all out, masterminded by Sophie Molineux (3/20) and Shreyanka Patil (4/12), there was only going to be one victor. Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning put together a brilliant opening partnership for the hosts, scoring 64 runs together. However, after Molineux’s three-wicket over, Delhi lost all ten of their wickets for forty-nine runs.

In response, RCB completed the chase with three balls remaining thanks to the efforts of their talisman captain Mandhana (31), Sophie Devine (32) and the influential Ellyse Perry (35 not out). Former Indian cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were all in praise for the team after RCB’s women’s WPL title win. “Congratulations to the @RCBTweets women’s team for bagging the @wplt20 title,” tweeted the former captain of India. India’s women’s cricket scene is really taking off, and Sehwag commented, “Many congratulations to RCB on winning the WPL. Excellent temperament demonstrated under stressful times and worthy victors. #WPLFinal.

The Royals’ fans have been looking forward to the squad winning a championship for more than ten years. Three finals were reached by the men’s team of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2009, 2011, and 2016. All three of those finals included former team leader Virat Kohli, who captained the squad in the last one. After the women’s team won on Sunday, Kohli was overjoyed and joined in on the celebrations at the stadium via video call. He then posted a one-word tale on Instagram. The text said “Superwomen.”

The RCB men’s team will now be under pressure following Mandhana and Co.’s WPL success in just their second attempt when the 2024 IPL season gets underway next week. On March 22, RCB will take on the reigning champion Chennai Super Kings at home in Bengaluru in the season’s opening match.
