Georgia Wareham’s AB de Villiers-Inspired Fielding Masterclass: A Sensational Effort for RCB vs. DC in WPL Action!”
Shafali Varma was denied a six by Georgia Wareham, in what may go down as one of the season’s best fielding performances. Though they lost to the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for their first season loss, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) supporters saw a few things that would have made them grin. Some RCB supporters may have been reminded of what AB de Villiers performed in the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) matchup with Sunrisers Hyderabad due to his outstanding fielding display at the boundary line. Smriti Mandhana, the captain of the RCB, won the toss and chose to bat first. The event occurred off the third delivery of the 11th over of the DC innings. Taking their bowlers to be cleaned was Shafali Verma’s and Alice Capsey’s task. On her debut for the Royals, Nadine de Clerk was hammered for a six by Capsey on the first ball of her over. From then on, Shafali went on the attack and took the third delivery for a massive shot.
The powerful-hitting Indian opener attempted to clear Wareham’s deep midwicket boundary. To stop a six-pack, the Australian perfectly timed her leap, caught the ball in midair and threw it back into play. In the end, Wareham saved four runs as the batter ran two. On social media, astute observers quickly noted the parallels between her effort and De Villiers’s performance in 2018, with the exception that the legendary South African player ultimately accepted the catch and benched the powerful Alex Hales. When RCB batted first in that match, De Villiers scored 69 runs in 39 balls, leading his team to victory by 14 runs.

But on Thursday in the WPL, RCB’s situation was different as they fell to DC by a score of 25 runs. Shafali scored a half-century, and Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen combined to help DC score 70 runs in the final five overs as they amassed a total of 194/5. Smriti Mandhana, the captain, scored 74 off 43 balls, which gave RCB a rather spectacular start to the chase. Nevertheless, they lost it after the twelfth over and could only manage a mere 169/9 points.
