Jagdeep Dhankhar Criticizes Mallikarjun Kharge for Entering Rajya Sabha Well: ‘Tainted Day’
A significant disturbance broke out in the Rajya Sabha on Friday during the House’s consideration of a Motion of Thanks to the President’s speech, as the opposition called for a debate on purported anomalies in the NEET medical entrance exams. The Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, and other opposition MPs were seen entering the House well, and Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar voiced his ire.
“The Leader of the Opposition has visited the Well on this tainted day in the history of the Indian Parliament.” There has never been anything like this. I am hurt and surprised. Vice-President Dhankhar informed the House that “the Indian parliamentary tradition will deteriorate to such an extent that the Leader of the Opposition and the Deputy Leader will come to the Well.”
Mukul Wasnik, the senior head of the party, and Pramod Tiwari, the deputy leader, also entered. I was experiencing extreme agony at the time. He went on, “We expect the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition to provide an example of behavior that is commendable.
“Everyone in the House watched him go to the well,” said the Rajya Sabha chairman in reference to Kharge’s plunge into the well. For me, though, the most excruciating and upsetting thing is that he has talked falsehoods, misrepresented himself, and conveyed false information. He is in denial, and his remark that he posted on Twitter (now X) contradicts itself.” Raising shouts to demand an immediate discussion on the NEET dispute, the opposition INDIA group MPs repeatedly adjourned the Rajya Sabha during the day.
Congress chief Kharge’s clarification
Mallikarjun Kharge, the head of Congress, answered the V-P’s statement. “Jagdeep Dhankhar, the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, made the error…I entered the house to get his attention. However, he wasn’t looking even then. I was attracting notice. He was focusing solely on the governing party. He should have looked at me when I called his attention in accordance with the rules, but he purposefully disregarded me in order to offend me.
What was left for me, then? Therefore, I would have to either walk inside or yell loudly to get attention. I shall thus categorically state that Chairman Sahab made a mistake. It is my opinion that he ought to refrain from doing this and uphold the honor of the Rajya Sabha.

“Thousands of youngsters are concerned since there have been large-scale frauds, the NEET test, and the paper leak. Thus, we requested a particular conversation in order to highlight the issue of individuals. Our intention was to bring attention to the problems faced by the students, not to cause any disturbances. But the reason we had to take this action was because he ignored it and didn’t give it a chance,” Kharge said.
