Jay Shah Explains Rahul Dravid’s Decision Not to Re-Apply for Head Coach Role; Confirms Two Shortlisted Candidates

Rahul Dravid, who assumed the position of head coach of India in November 2021, resigned from it on Saturday following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024. It is also Dravid’s first Indian Cup victory as head coach, and a lot of fans and analysts wish he had stayed. The BCCI secretary gave the media in Barbados an explanation for Dravid’s decision not to renew his contract: “He told me that due to family commitments he wants to quit and we respect his decision.” He wasn’t pressured by me to prolong.”

“Rahul bhai has served Indian cricket for the past five and a half years,” Shah added about Dravid’s coaching work. He led Team India as head coach for the last two and a half years after serving as director of the National Cricket Academy for three years.”

Shah also discussed the rationale behind the extension of Dravid’s contract following India’s defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. He highlighted Dravid’s crucial position in the team and drew parallels between him and Rohit Sharma. In this T20 World Cup championship victory, Rohit Sharma is not more significant than Rahul Dravid. He’s a man who led the side to the 2023 ODI World Cup final and stayed behind to see the task through to completion,” he remarked.

Shah did not name the new head coach, but he did say that the squad would have a new one after the limited-overs series in Sri Lanka later in July. “The appointments of the selector and coach will be announced soon. Once in Mumbai, we will follow the decision made by CAC, which conducted interviews and shortlisted two names. He stated, “VVS Laxman is leaving for Zimbabwe, but a new coach from the Sri Lanka series will join.”
