Polygraph Test Flags Inconsistencies in Statements of Sanjay Roy, Main Accused in Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case

Polygraph Test Flags Inconsistencies in Statements of Sanjay Roy, Main Accused in Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case

A number of false and unconvincing answers reportedly came in the polygraph test conducted on the main accused, Sanjay Roy, in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The lie detector test conducted by the CBI on Sunday, August 25, found Roy’s statements conflicting, thus heightening further suspicion about his involvement in the crime.

Sanjay Roy, 33-year-old civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10 after crucial evidence related to the crime scene led police to him. Though he admitted to the crime initially, later on, Roy claimed innocence, while convincing himself: he is being framed for the felony. He told in the polygraph test that the victim was already dead when he reached the seminar hall, where her body was found on August 9.

Sourcesquoted by Times of India said that Roy appeared fidgety and anxious during the test. He was confronted with several pieces of evidence, to which he offered alibis, saying he ran away from the premises since he was afraid after seeing the body. His lawyer Kavita Sarkar alleged that the defense was not informed about the timing and location of the polygraph test, thus raising questions of violation of National Human Rights Commission guidelines since a defense lawyer was not present during the test.

The test, at Kolkata’s Presidency Jail, lasted nearly four hours. The lie-detector test was conducted by a team of experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Delhi, who were flown in. Besides Roy, four other people, including former principal Sandip Ghosh, underwent the lie-detector tests on August 24.

Contrary to Roy’s claims of innocence, there have been serious discrepancies in his statement, due to which the investigating team began to suspect that he was trying to divert the probe. A local court in Kolkata has given the CBI the green signal to conduct polygraph tests on seven people, including the two accused, Roy and Ghosh. The results of these tests cannot be presented as evidence in the court during the trial but may certainly give the investigating team an idea for further investigation.
