People are Free to Marry Anyone’: How BSP Chief Mayawati Responded to Expulsion Reports

The head of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Mayawati, has refuted claims that a politician was kicked out of the party because his son married a lawmaker’s daughter from the Samajwadi Party. She said that party connections shouldn’t control personal choices and that members of her party are allowed to marry anybody from any political background. The BSP’s Rampur district president, Surendra Sagar, was allegedly dismissed over his son’s marriage to the daughter of Tribhuvan Dutt, a Samajwadi Party MLA from Alapur in Ambedkar Nagar.

In a series of Hindi-language tweets on X (previously Twitter) on Friday night, Mayawati addressed the matter, stating that Sagar and Pramod Kumar, the current district president of the BSP in Rampur, were expelled because of a growing disagreement between them. She said that this disagreement had nothing to do with the marriage and was just having an impact on how the parties were operating. “The party’s work was suffering because of the peak of the argument between current party president Pramod Kumar and former party president of Rampur district Surendra Sagar,” Mayawati remarked. She restated, “It has nothing to do with the marriage.”

In a another tweet, Mayawati stated that due to worries about possible conflicts between members of the two parties, BSP members were not permitted to attend the wedding of the son of former BSP MP Munqad Ali. Ali’s daughter ran on an SP ticket in the Meerapur state assembly by-election. The marriage in question was between Shah Mohammad, the son of former MP Qadir Rana, and Sumbul Rana, the Meerapur candidate for the SP. “The BSP also contested the seat,” Mayawati said. At the wedding, there was a general conversation regarding potential conflicts between the members of the two sides. The party was compelled to take this action in order to prevent this. However, the manner in which it is being promoted is incorrect.

People are allowed to marry anyone they choose, regardless of their political membership, Mayawati stressed, adding that the BSP does not meddle in their private affairs. She advised against disseminating misleading information regarding such private issues, nevertheless.
