Patna Police Cop Mistakenly Hits SDM During Lathi Charge Amid Bharat Bandh Protests, Incident Goes Viral
One of the most surprising and chaotic moments to emerge out of the Bharat Bandh protests in Patna was when a cop mistakenly hit an SDM, Shrikant Kundlik Khandekar, with his baton while dispersing protesters. This happened on Wednesday as the Patna Police were carrying out a lathi charge in order to clean up the roads blocked by protesters.
Visuals from the scene, shared on social media platform X, show the cop inadvertently striking SDM Khandekar, who stood in the middle of the road and directed the dispersal of protesters. The visibly agitated SDM, after being hit, was controlled by other officers, who promptly intervened to stop the cop and explained the mistake. The SDM had to then be escorted away from the scene by the police.
The incident rapidly went viral, accompanied by expressions of mirthful reactions on the internet. Netizens found the mix-up amusing; comments like “When you aim for the crowd but end up hitting the boss – classic!” and “Looks like someone needs a refresher course on who’s who!” showed the lightness in which the responses were taken.
The lathi-charge was done to scatter the protesters, who had blocked the traffic in front of Dak Bungalow Chowk, a main intersection in state capital. SSP Patna Rajeev Mishra said that the lathi charge became necessary after the protesters broke three-tier police barricades and disrupted vehicular movement. He further clarified that nobody was injured in the incident, and the situation soon came under control.

The Bharat Bandh paralysed life across Bihar, as angry agitators blocked roads, including national highways, and stopped the movement of trains at Darbhanga and Buxar railway stations. The bandh call was given by 21 outfits protesting the SC’s August 1 decision on SC-ST reservations. RJD and other INDIA bloc partners jumped in to support the bandh, with Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav also hitting the streets in protest.
