Pakistan Government Set to Ban Imran Khan’s PTI Party: Major Blow to Jailed Ex-PM

The Pakistani government will not permit the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Imran Khan and currently imprisoned for alleged anti-state activities. According to AFP, Attaullah Tarar, Pakistan’s minister of communications, declared, “The federal government will move a case to ban the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf).” “We maintain that PTI ought to be prohibited based on reliable evidence,” the minister continued. Due to a number of court cases that Khan claims were planned to keep him from winning again in the February national elections, he has been imprisoned for roughly a year. Following the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) successful eight-day remand in the Toshakhana case, cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan was ‘arrested’ by Lahore Police earlier in the day in relation to cases against him over the May 9 riots of last year.

The PTI chairman in three May 9 riot cases had his pre-arrest bail overturned by Lahore’s ATC last week, allowing police to question him in detention. He was arrested on May 9 of last year on allegations of aiding and abetting the attack on the Lahore Corps Commander House, also known as Jinnah House, Askari Tower, and Shadman police station. Days after the Pakistani Supreme Court ruled that PTI was entitled to a portion of the reserved seats in the national province assembly, the Shehbaz Sharif government took action.
