Operation Bhediya: 4 Wolves Captured in UP’s Bahraich After Deadly Attacks; 2 Still at Large

After the killings of eight people and injuries to more than 15 others with a pack of wolves in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, the district forest department has taken up “Operation Bhediya” to capture the wolves that have caused the attacks.

They have already caught four wolves while the other two are still pending and efforts to catch them are continuously going on. On Thursday, one of the wolves was caught by the forest officials and sent to the shelter home.

The Bahraich forest department launched the catching operation, code-named “Operation Bhediya,” deploying drone cameras and thermal mapping.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was personally monitoring the operation, while Forest Minister Arun Saxena visited the affected district on Wednesday to meet the victims’ families.

Saxena, during his visit, attempted to reassure the residents that everything possible is being done by the Forest Department to catch the wolves so that the people can be safe.

The district administration has given an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh each to the families of four deceased, while for the remaining victims’, the process is on.

The minister, while emphasizing that the department was on high alert, advised the residents to avoid sleeping outdoors at night, to keep the children indoors, and to securely lock their doors.

He further recommended that they move in groups and move around with sticks whenever they had to go outside.

The Bahraich police official speaking to IANS on Wednesday night said, “Drones, nets and cages are being used to catch the wolves. We are continuously trying to catch them. We are ensuring that no untoward incident takes place. 8 people have lost their lives and 15 others are injured.”

In fact, even after capturing four wolves, it is not clear as to how many are there in the area,” an official said, quoting PTI on Wednesday.

Speaking to mediapersons, Principal Chief Forest Conservator, Sanjay Srivastava said, “We have deployed 16 teams to capture the wolves and 12 district level officers are also stationed here. Additional Principal Chief Forest Conservator Renu Singh will continue to stay here till the remaining wolves are captured.”

The permission to tranquilize the wolves has been given by the Chief Wildlife Warden, and according to District Magistrate Monika Rani, the provision of doors in the houses without them, and night patrolling in all villages is underway.

ASHA workers have also been engaged to spread awareness among the residents. According to officials, a spate of wolf attacks in different villages of Mehsi tehsil has left six children and a woman dead over the past 45 days, taking the total number of casualties to eight.
