New Retention Rule Considered by BCCI for IPL 2025 Mega Auction
By year’s end, the 18th season of the Indian Premier League in 2025 is scheduled to see yet another massive auction. The amount of retentions that a team franchise is allowed to have after reaching a solid agreement with the other team franchises to hold the mega auction is a issue that has not been addressed yet.
A close source close to the BCCI has revealed that the owners of all ten IPL team franchises have been summoned by the board to a meeting next week on April 16 in Ahmedabad, where decisions will be made about retentions for the forthcoming IPL 2025 super auction.
BCCI Faces Resistance Over IPL Retention Rule Change
The insider stated that there is a chance to keep at least eight players, but added, “Things are at a very nascent stage.” The board is looking for suggestions on how to continue the league. A big part of that is player retention. The bulk of teams support a clause allowing them to hold onto eight players prior to the auction, based on unofficial conversations.”

The source disclosed that franchises are hesitant to regularly alter the nucleus of the team. All eight team franchises were allowed to be retained in the previously held IPL 2022 super auction, coupled with a “Right to match” (RTM). Each side was only allowed to keep five players with the RTM card; no more than two foreign players could be retained. The talking topics will probably be the main focus of the April 16 meeting.
