Rohit Sharma’s Unfiltered Chat with KKR Coach Sparks Fresh Controversy: ‘It depends on them, I don’t care

The Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2024 campaign has been forgettable. When Hardik Pandya took over as team captain, replacing five-time champion Rohit Sharma, the squad was engulfed in controversy months before the season even started. The team’s fans were also incensed with the decision, as they made fun of Hardik in the season’s first games. Similar reactions to MI’s unceremoniously dismissal of Rohit as captain were seen at other venues, where Hardik was welcomed with open arms.

As a result, MI’s performances faltered as a team, and they were eliminated earlier this week, making history as the first team ousted from the playoffs. It would be incorrect, nevertheless, to assume that this is the final MI story for this season. A pre-game video featuring Rohit Sharma and KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar went viral. The squad was playing the Kolkata Knight Riders. That could have shown Sharma’s discontent with the Mumbai Indians’ recent performance. Despite not mentioning his team by name, Rohit’s remarks allude to MI. “Change is happening one by one; ek ek cheez ho raha hai.” Wow, it’s amazing; the data isn’t that clear for that one issue. Amidst continuous fan chants, Rohit could be heard saying to Nayar, “It depends on them; I don’t care about that.”

Temple jo hai na maine banwaya hai, jo bhi hai woh mera ghar hai bhai. That’s my home, whatever it may be. It’s a temple that I’ve constructed,” Rohit would say to Nayar, implying that the team’s former captain must be referring to the Mumbai Indians. Supporters also stated that they overheard Rohit say, “Bhai mera kya, mera toh last hai (Anyway, this is my last),” although the audio quality is hazy. A source from earlier this week also stated that at a team meeting, many senior MI players—Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav—spoke up about the reasons for the club’s dismal season-long results. A few players were also invited to have one-on-one meetings with MI’s upper management to talk about the team’s plan and possible shifts in methodology.

KKR host MI

MI will play for dignity when they meet the high-flying Knight Riders in Kolkata, as the team is already eliminated from the playoff chase. If KKR wins on Saturday, they will have a two-point advantage over the Rajasthan Royals, who are now tied with Sanju Samson’s team but ahead on net run rate. It’s quite likely that KKR and RR will make the playoffs this season.
