Mumbai BEST Bus Accident: Six Dead, 43 Injured as Driver Arrested

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, a tragic accident involving a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus happened late Monday night (December 9, 2024) at Kurla Bhaji Market in Mumbai, leaving at least 43 people injured and six people dead.

Around 9:30 p.m., the BEST bus, which was heading to Saki Naka from Kurla railway station, lost control and collided with 20 to 25 vehicles, including vans, bikes, and autorickshaws, on S.G. Barve Marg. in Kurla West. Several people were also struck in the collision.

Emergency personnel, such as the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Quick Response Team (QRT), were sent to the scene right away. Kurla Bhabha, Kohinoor, Seven Hills, Gulam Hussain City, and Habib hospitals were the first to get care for the injured.

Six people have died, up from the original four reported. The victims thus far recognized are:

  • Kannis Fatima Ansari (55)
  • Afreen Abdul Salim Shah (19)
  • Anam Shaikh (20)
  • Shivam Kashyap (18)

Sanjay More, the driver of electric bus 8228, has been taken into custody. According to him, the bus struck numerous vehicles and walkers before grinding to a halt at Buddha Settlement, an adjoining private area, because of a brake disappointment.
