IMD Issues Red Alert for Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala; Schools Closed Today, Light Showers Expected in Delhi
The monsoon has started to move downward, according to the India Meteorological Department, and this week it is expected to reach the coastal regions of Kerala, Karnataka, and Konkan Goa. According to the IMD, these states will get significant rainfall and thunderstorms in the upcoming days. In response to heavy rain in the coastal state and an IMD red alert in several areas of the state, the Goa education department on Sunday declared a holiday for schools to include Class 12 on Monday, July 15. A red alert has been issued by the IMD for Monday in Kerala for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod, & an orange alert for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. Due to heavy rain and thunderstorms on July 15, schools and institutions in six districts of Kerala will stay closed.
Parts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa are expected to receive more than 20 cm of rain over the next few days, according to the IMD’s forecast bulletin. In the meantime, severe rains have prompted the issuance of a red alert in four districts of Maharashtra: Satara, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri. Four districts were placed under a red alert, although Thane, Raigad, Pune, and Palghar received yellow and orange alerts from the IMD, respectively. Thunderstorms and persistent rain were accompanied by reports of severe waterlogging in Mumbai’s suburbs.
Although there was no color-coded notice for the nation’s capital, the IMD predicted that Delhi NCR should get light rain and moderate winds in the upcoming days. On Saturday morning, heavy rains caused waterlogging and traffic jams in certain areas of Delhi. But more relief from the July heat came with the rain. Early in the morning, rain was also seen in nearby Noida. Images taken in central Delhi saw traffic moving slowly because of flooded roads.
