PM Modi Slams INDIA Bloc Amid Constitution Protest: ‘Those Who Imposed Emergency…’

According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, people who imposed the Emergency have no right to declare their devotion for the Constitution, following a major demonstration against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government by the INDIA group one day earlier inside the Parliament grounds. Prime Minister Modi said on the 49th anniversary of the Emergency’s declaration that the dark days demonstrated how the Congress violated the Constitution and destroyed fundamental liberties.

“We honor the great men and women who stood up to the Emergency on this day.” Every Indian respects the Constitution of India greatly, and the #DarkDaysOfEmergency remind us of how the Congress Party subverted basic freedoms and trampled over it,” he wrote on X. The Emergency was declared on June 25, 1975, by Indira Gandhi, the former prime minister and grandmother of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Following the emergency, most civil liberties were suspended for more than two years. In 1977, she made election announcements.

“Every democratic principle and made the nation a jail,” according to Prime Minister Modi, was ignored by the Congress government at the time. He added that under the emergency, socially conservative policies were implemented, and anyone who disagreed with the Congress was tortured. “To say that we cherish our Constitution is an insult to those who issued the proclamation of emergency. PM Modi stated, “These are the same people who have repeatedly enforced Article 356, obtained a bill to stifle press freedom, destroyed federalism, and broken every provision of the Constitution.”

“The party that declared the emergency remains committed to the same ideology that gave rise to it. The Indian people have consistently rejected them because they are a people who cannot disguise their contempt for the Constitution behind their tokenism,” he continued. Inside the Parliament building on Monday, leaders of the INDIA bloc demonstrated by displaying copies of the Constitution. Several opposition leaders participated in the demonstration, including DMK M Kanimozhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, and others.

Congressman Rahul Gandhi held up a copy of the Constitution as Prime Minister Modi swore in as a member of the Lok Sabha. “The INDIA alliance will protect the constitution at the cost of its life,” the Congress declared after sharing an 8-second video of the incident on X. The incident, according to federal home minister Amit Shah, is the most significant illustration of the Congress’s lengthy history of attempting to destroy democracy. On “X,” BJP President J P Nadda stated that people claiming to be the modern-day protectors of Indian democracy had spared no effort to silence critics of the constitution’s core principles. The emergency is a dark chapter in Indian democracy’s history, according to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
