Manoj Tiwary Startling Admission: Clash with Gautam Gambhir Cost Me Financially During KKR Tenure

From 2010 to 2013, Manoj Tiwary, a former Indian cricket player, was a vital part of the Kolkata Knight Riders club. In the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium during the 2012 Indian Premier League (IPL) final, he struck a boundary off Dwayne Bravo to end the game-winning run and help the Kerala Kings win their first-ever IPL championship. Following a contentious argument with current team leader Gautam Gambhir, Tiwary’s tenure with the team was terminated. After that, Tiwary was a part of the Kolkata group for precisely one season.

Only a few days had passed since Tiwary’s Ranji Trophy career came to an end at the Eden Gardens, where he had guided Bengal to victory against Bihar in their league final. This is a historic revelation. Although the event was never made public, the 38-year-old revealed to Anandabazar Patrika that he and Gambhir—who is currently back at KKR as their mentor—had a heated dispute in the locker room in 2013. He acknowledged that, even though he has no regrets, he would have played for KKR for a few more seasons and might have even been paid more for the extended stay if the incident had not happened.

“Gambir and I got into a heated altercation in the dressing room when I was at KKR. That was never revealed. In 2012, KKR emerged victorious. My four at that point gave the team the victory. I was given another year to play for KKR. Maybe I could have played for another two or three years if I hadn’t fought with Gambhir in 2013. That would have increased the amount I was meant to get under the terms of the contract. There would be a stronger bank balance. However, I had never considered it, “he remarked.

Tiwary, a 2008–09 player for the Delhi Daredevils (now the Delhi Capitals), expressed similar dissatisfaction with the team’s starting lineup selection procedure. He believed that while few athletes were hurt, better players were consistently disregarded. Tiwary told the management to let him go because he was frustrated with the lack of opportunities, but this decision backfired because he lost his contract.

“The coach for the Delhi Capitals when I played was Gary Kirsten. Match after match, I could see that things were not going well for the first eleven. It’s not the right combo. A chance to play cricket was not being given to eligible players. Many were absent because of wounds. The team’s outcomes weren’t great. I said, “Leave me if you can’t put me in the XI,” without hesitation. Back then, I had a ₹2.8 crore contract. I never imagined that they would misinterpret me and leave me if I said this. I never considered my loss,” he remarked. During his 96 IPL matches, Tiwary scored 1686 runs with seven fifties. He played in the final IPL match of 2018.
