AAP’s Manish Sisodia’s Judicial Custody Extended in Delhi Excise Policy Case till April 18

A Delhi court on Saturday prolonged Manish Sisodia’s judicial detention until April 18 in connection with a money laundering case involving the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy. Manish Sisodia was brought before the court when his previous judicial custody was about to expire, and Special Judge Kaveri Baweja prolonged his judicial custody. Sanjay Singh, a fellow party member and co-accused in the case who was recently granted bail by the Supreme Court, also showed up in court for the proceedings.

On February 26, 2023, Manish Sisodia was taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for his purported involvement in the “scam.” In a money-laundering case resulting from the CBI FIR, the ED detained Sisodia on March 9, 2023. On February 28, 2023, Sisodia bid farewell to the Delhi cabinet. This week, the head of the Aam Aadmi Party said that the Enforcement Directorate had failed to provide evidence linking him to the money trail. He is entitled to bail, as his attorney informed the court since the claims against him have not yet been proven.

The Delhi Excise Policy was allegedly modified irregularly, license holders received excessive benefits, the license cost was lowered or waived, and licenses were extended without the consent of the appropriate authority, according to allegations made by the CBI and the ED. In a letter to the public written from within Tihar Jail on Friday, a day before his bail hearing, Manish Sisodia compared his situation to the atrocities the British had inflicted on independence fighters and reaffirmed his dedication to children’s education.

Arvind Kejriwal is in Tihar till April 15.

Arvind Kejriwal was placed in Tihar Jail before his next hearing after the Rouse Avenue court in Delhi on Monday prolonged his custody until April 15. Kejriwal, unlike Sisodia, declared he would not resign from office and would instead continue to lead the Delhi government while incarcerated. Following his incarceration, Kejriwal claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party was involved in a “political conspiracy” to overthrow his government in the nation’s capital by employing federal agencies like the ED and CBI.

On March 28, he addressed the Delhi court, stating that there was no justification for his imprisonment because the ED had not made any concrete accusations against him in their report. To examine the cell phones that were taken from Kejriwal’s home, the ED, however, requested an extension of his detention. Additionally, they stated that they wished to confront some of the defendants in the excise policy issue directly with Kejriwal.
