Manish Malhotra Recalls How He Met Karan Johar and Their Decades-Long Friendship

Fashion designer Manish Malhotra recently opened up about his three-decade friendship with filmmaker Karan Johar in an interaction. While the two have been friends for a period spanning over three decades, Malhotra reminisced about how it all began on the sets of the 1993 film Gumrah, produced by Karan’s father, Yash Johar.

Manish Malhotra shared that he met the filmmaker first time when he was working on the movie, and Sridevi introduced Malhotra to KJo. Slowly and gradually, a mutual interest in each other’s work grew because of a common love for films and fashion, so their friendship continued with countless collaborations over two decades. Malhotra shared that still, there’s a distinct memory from the time he worked on the movie Duplicate and even though Karan was only a producer’s son, he had too much to say about wardrobe choices and that’s how mutual respect for each other’s work started.

Although their friendship has been strong, working with each other has not always been seamless. Malhotra gave the example during the filming of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham when Johar passed on a lehenga Malhotra had created for the track “Suraj Hua Maddham.” Malhotra was disappointed and even hurt, but their friend¬ ship survived this test, being a testament that the two friends operate on the premises of pure, unadulterated honesty.

Manish said Karan had been a warm and honest friend like very few and that no one could keep it so professional for so many years.
