Loyalty Above All: RCB Celebrates 16 Years of Virat Kohli’s IPL Journey

One such player is Virat Kohli, who has set records in practically every competition in which he has participated during the course of his illustrious 15-year career. The batting legend first gained recognition on the global stage in 2008, having just won the World Cup with the India Under-19 team. In the competition, Kohli ranked second for his team in runs scored. During the campaign, he scored 235 runs overall, including a century against the West Indies. After his impressive performance, Kohli became the talk of the town, with many speculating that he would become Indian cricket’s next great thing.

Following his victory in the U-19 World Cup, Virat Kohli was selected for the Indian Premier League (IPL) inaugural auction in March of that same year. Kohli, who was 19 at the time, signed with Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Indian batsman has now played for the team for up to 16 seasons, making him one of the most devoted members of the RCB family.

Today is the 16th anniversary of Virat Kohli’s first IPL contract, and the Bangalore-based team has released a unique film that highlights some of his greatest moments in the Indian T20 league. RCB captioned the video of X (formerly Twitter) with the words, “Loyalty above all.” King Kohli, you are loved.

Virat Kohli’s Evolution in the IPL

The first IPL season, when Rahul Dravid, the current head coach and a former Indian batsman, captained the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), saw Virat Kohli fail to create anything noteworthy. Despite his club being in second worst place in the points table, Kohli scored just 165 runs in his 13 matches throughout the 2008 campaign.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli did not need much time to prove his dominance in the IPL. In 2013, he was appointed the RCB’s regular captain. The team made it to the playoffs four times under his direction, but they were never able to win the championship. At the conclusion of the 2021 season, Kohli announced his retirement, and Faf du Plessis assumed command as skipper.

Virat Kohli has broken multiple individual records during his 16-year IPL career, despite not winning the title. In the tournament’s history, he has scored the most runs. Throughout his 237 IPL games, Kohli has amassed 7263 runs at an average of 37.24. In 2016, he also scored 976 runs in a single season, setting a new record. The most IPL hundreds by an Indian batter, five, have been achieved by Kohli.
