Los Angeles Wildfires: Death Toll Hits 10 as Fires Devastate Posh LA Neighborhoods

Ten confirmed deaths have been caused by the destructive wildfires in Los Angeles, California, according to the county coroner’s office. The flames, which started earlier this week, are still wreaking havoc throughout southern California, causing extensive damage, including major devastation in regions that are known for being close to Hollywood. The Department of Medical Examiner verified the number of fire-related deaths as of January 9, although authorities caution that as rescue crews search through the rubble, the precise number may rise. Notifying the next of kin and identifying the dead are still waiting.

The Ongoing Battle Against the Blaze

Multiple wildfires are being fought by firefighters, and the situation has gotten worse due to high winds. Authorities are working around the clock to stop the spread of flames, but the fires are still unrelenting despite the destruction of almost 10,000 houses. The Pacific Palisades, Pasadena, and Altadena regions were especially affected by the Santa Ana winds that fueled the flames, which may reach hurricane-like rates of over 70 mph (112 km/h). The National Weather Service warned that even with the decreased gusts, flames might spread quickly on Thursday, despite a modest decrease in wind. On Tuesday, there will likely be more severe winds.

Destruction in Pacific Palisades and Pasadena

Most of the fires have been in the Pacific Palisades, which is home to several celebrity homes. It is the most catastrophic fire in the history of Los Angeles, having damaged or destroyed over 5,300 structures. Only the silhouettes of houses and chimneys remain after the fires have turned hundreds of blocks into ash. 5,000 buildings, including residences, apartments, and business establishments, were consumed by fire in the Eaton Fire north of Pasadena. More than 21 square miles (54 square kilometers) of land have been burnt by the fire, which has also seriously damaged five Altadena school sites.

The Impact on Hollywood and Residents

Many locals have been forced to leave their homes due to the flames, including a few notable Hollywood celebrities. The destruction is enormous to the point that it covers in excess of 30 square miles (77 square kilometers) in the Pacific Palisades alone. Recovery operations are still urgent as the fire spreads, with the expectation that the worst of the devastation is gone.
