Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: Protesting Doctors Agree to Meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee
Doctors in Kolkata, protesting against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have agreed to engage with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in sorting out their grievances – two days after a stiff warning from the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court had earlier asked the protesting doctors to call off their strike and return to work. Defying that order, doctors persisted with their protest and failed to meet the deadline set by the court on Tuesday.
In a recent turn of events, the doctors have decided to seek an audience with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by sending an email to her office for a meeting. They have pledged to place their demands before the Chief Minister directly.
Demanding justice for the victim and action against those who tried to cover up the crime, the protesting doctors said, “We would be sending formal email to the CM office seeking a meeting to discuss our demands,” Dr. Aniket Mandal, Spokesperson of the doctors,.
The lady doctor had been found dead in a semi-naked condition in the hospital seminar hall. The arrested accused in this case is one Sanjay Roy, civil volunteer, captured by CCTV cameras while entering the hall at 4:03 am. According to police, the accused, Roy, pleaded innocence on the ground that he found the doctor unconscious.
