BCCI Penalizes Shreyas Iyer as Kolkata Knight Riders Breach IPL Code of Conduct Against RR

In an IPL 2024 match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday, the BCCI fined Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Shreyas Iyer ₹12 lakh after his team was found guilty of keeping a slow over rate. Overrate offenses are violations of the IPL Code of Conduct, and the team captain is held accountable for the first offense. “Shreyas Iyer, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens on April 17,” the BCCI announced on Wednesday.

“As it was his team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh.” KKR’s poor over rate may have cost them the match as they were forced to play with one fielder less in the deep in the last over. With the final ball, Jos Buttler scored the game-winning runs to give RR the victory. Buttler (107, not out of 60 balls) outlasted Sunil Narine’s (109) century in the first half to strike the winning runs in the last ball after he battled through a sluggish start and quickly increasing asking rate to stay with the Rajasthan Royals till the very end.

RR solidified their lead at the top of the table by pulling off the joint-highest chase in IPL history. For the majority of the game, KKR led, with RR requiring an incredible 96 runs in the final six overs. However, Buttler pulled off a remarkable move to deny KKR the win. After missing RR’s previous game due to injury, the England white-ball captain was an impact sub on Tuesday and ended up being the decisive factor in the result. During his cool-ass knock, Buttler smacked six sixes and nine fours.

Iyer also thought that was a hard pill to take. “Yeah, I agree that our feelings were quite turbulent; I never imagined we would find ourselves in this predicament. He was hitting the ball neatly and timing them so perfectly that it was ultimately a comical game, so he had to accept it and go on. “It’s good that it happened now rather than in the later stages of the tournament; good learning for us,” he said in the post-match interview with the broadcasters. “At this point, you see that you bowl your best deliveries, a little bit hit or miss, and you are sent out of the ground.”
