Kiran Rao Opens Up About Multiple Miscarriages Before Welcoming Son Azad with Aamir Khan
Laapataa Ladies, Kiran Rao’s second film, was a remarkable return for the director. The heartfelt film, which included all fresh actors, earned the filmmaker accolades. If Kiran has ever regretted taking a ten-year break from her work to raise her son Azad, it was brought up in a recent interview. Before deciding to use surrogacy to have a kid, she disclosed all the experiences she had to go through.
The tough journey to motherhood
In an interview, Kiran said that she experienced several miscarriages. She declared that she yearned to become a mother. “The year Azad was born coincided with the creation of Dhobi Ghat. I had also made a lot of effort to become a parent. I experienced numerous miscarriages and various health problems, both personal and medical, for five years. It was just so difficult for me to become a parent. When Azad was born, it was because I was so eager to have a child. I didn’t need to choose. Of course, raising my child was my only priority,” she remarked.
Azad was born in 2011 through a surrogate to Aamir Khan and Kiran. Azad was co-parented by them after their divorce. “I had a great time with Azad. Those were some of my most fruitful years. I will never regret not having produced a movie for ten years. I had a great time, so I don’t regret anything,” she stated in the interview.
Opting for surrogacy
In a 2013 interview, Kiran discussed her decision to use a surrogate. The reasons why someone can’t conceive naturally or why they prefer one procedure over another are private matters, and people generally don’t want to discuss them. We decided to be transparent. We were aware that we would always be questioned about it because we are in the public spotlight, and we have never felt defensive about it. Naturally, it would be beneficial for people to know about our experience, she stated.

After 50 days at the box office, Laapataa Ladies is now complete. The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) presented Laapataa Ladies, which had a mediocre run at the box office. The narrative of the brides Phool and Pushpa, who unintentionally switch places during a train voyage, is told in Laapataa Ladies, which is set in the fictional state of Nirmal Pradesh in 2001. Jio Studios is the film’s presenter, and Aamir Khan Productions and Kiran Rao’s Kindling Productions are its producers.
