Even after 18 days and the accusation she has made by another 18 year old athlete in Kerala alleging sexual abuse by 58 men over the last five years in Elavumthitta, the country is stunned. While the police is investigating the case and have arrested 44 of the men, chilling details revealed that the abuse of the woman, who was minor back then, was started by a childhood friend.

As per the reports, out of the 58 arrested males, 44 were from Dalit settlement where the survivor resided and adjoining regions. After the disclosure, 29 cases have been filed in total at four police stations with various sections under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Revealing chilling details regarding the horrific abuse case, The News Minute reported that one of the first to be arrested was Subin the one who allegedly initiated the abuse when the survivor was only 13.

It has been reported that Subin was the survivour’s childhood friend and their houses were situated nearby. Subin had allegedly sexually assaulted her and recorded images and videos of her, which he used to threaten her into providing sexual favours for a friend.

Subin, reportedly further brought two other men, who in turn continued to abuse the same teen. This cycle repeated for the years few years after which victim’s numbers and pictures circulated among different groups of men and minor boys.

The individuals arrested also involved her classmates from school. As per the police, the arrested individuals include drivers, daily wage workers and most men from nearby houses (some of whom were even married). Further during the investigation, it was learnt that there are four minors among the accused and two others who were minors at the time of the crime. Most of them reached out to her via social networks (such as Instagram and WhatsApp) and other social media channels.

The survivor has also revealed that several times multiple men were involved in the abuse; subsequently FIRs have been registered for gang rape.

In the meantime, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and the police are collaborating to provide all necessary support and protection to the victim.

How Does The Case Came Into Light?

As a response, the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrminatory Practices of the United Nations came up in the month of December, when the survivor shared her experience after a campaign of awareness conducted by Snehitha in her college. Snehitha is an effort by women empowerment group Kudumbashree, run by the state government, The News Minute has reported.

Reportedly, the survivor first spoke to a teacher at the institute she attends. The teacher then narrated her case to a counsellor at Snehitha who subsequently brought it to the notice of the CWC.

Parents Were Not Aware

Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Pathanamthitta, Advocate N Rajeev, informed that at first the mother of the victim was upset and reluctant to let her move into a centre for further counselling as she did not want her father to know about this.

The survivor’s parents are both daily wage labourers. She also has a brother.

Her parents did not even suspect trouble, as they often believed that they daughter was spending the vast majority of time away from home, due to her very busy sport schedule and competitiveness.

The fact was disclosed that the respondent used to send messages to the survivor on her father’s phone . The father used a smartphone, but knew little about its technical possibilities, Rajeev noted, adding that her father used to remain drunk most of the time and was unaware of the daughter using his phone.
