Kangana Ranaut’s Response to Critics: The Cost of Awakening a Sleeping Nation and the Lesson in Cool vs. Uncool

Kangana Ranaut’s Response to Critics: The Cost of Awakening a Sleeping Nation and the Lesson in Cool vs. Uncool

Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut went to social media on Wednesday as she often does over the criticism that came her way, saying, in so many words, that it was the “price you pay for awakening a sleeping nation.” Her comments have come amidst a slew of controversies and crude remarks thrown at her.

In a Facebook post, a BJP MP let out her frustration, thus: “Today I have become everyone’s favorite target. This is the price you pay for awakening this sleeping nation. They don’t understand what I’m talking about because they don’t want to take sides. They’re cool and chilled!” she wrote.

Ranaut then went on to berate people for not showing urgency about grave issues. She drew a strong contrast between those who have to face harsh realities, those she describes here as “cool and sleeping.”

“Wish that poor soldier on the border had the same privilege of being cool, not having to consider enemies. He protects you while you can indulge in comfortable ignorance,” she added.

Her remarks came after Himachal Pradesh Revenue Minister and Congress MLA Jagat Singh Negi slammed her. Negi had attacked Kangana in the state assembly, saying that the actress visited the flood-affected areas only after the waters receded as the rain would have spoiled her make-up. Earlier, Kangana shared pictures of her visit to the flood-ravaged state of Himachal Pradesh.

This was followed by a spat over a derogatory comment on Kangana by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former MP from Punjab Simranjit Singh Mann. Mann addressed Kangana’s comments on rape during farmers’ protests which invited more debate and criticism.

In related news, the release of Kangana’s film Emergency has been delayed. The movie is scheduled to reach the theaters on September 6, but now it is two weeks late after the order passed by the Bombay High Court. This comes at the back of a direction by the Madhya Pradesh High Court to the CBFC to sort out objections before the film was certified.

Zee Studios, co-producer of the film, has made this decision based on the delay in formal certification. Now, it is likely that the film gets certified only by September 18.
