Kangana Ranaut Reacts to Emergency Release Delay: ‘If Bhindranwale Is a Terrorist, My Film Should Release’
Kangana Ranaut reacted to the development as her latest film, Emergency, which was scheduled to hit the theatres on September 6, did not get released.
The film’s release has been delayed owing to pending certification by the censor board and objections by several Sikh groups that claimed the movie demeans the community.
Speaking at the India Chaupal event in New Delhi, Kangana defended her film and attacked its critics. She lashed out at those defending Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, calling him no saint but a terrorist.
“Our history has been deliberately kept hidden from us,” said Kangana, underlining, “Bhindranwale was not a saint who was sitting in a temple with an AK-47. Previous governments have declared Khalistanis as terrorists.”
Kangana said that only a minority is opposing her film and she believed a majority of Punjabis also did not consider Bhindranwale as a saint. “If he is a terrorist, then my film should be released,” she said.
She mentioned the losses in the wake of the delay: “It’s embarrassing and torturous. We faced huge losses when the release was called off just four days ago.”
Other than acting, Emergency is a film directed by Kangana. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Anupam Kher essays Jayaprakash Narayan, while late Satish Kaushik essays Former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram.

Despite the preparedness of the film to be released and certified, calls for its boycott and to ban it continue from a few Sikh organizations. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and the Akal Takht have demanded an immediate ban, accusing the film of “character assassination” and creating a biased narrative against Sikhs.
