IPL Chairman Announces Mega Auction for 2025 Edition: Report
The Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction is scheduled to resume in 2025, in advance of the 18th edition. According to a number of stories in 2022, the two-day player auction that allowed teams to keep only three to four players apiece before the start of a new season was going to be eliminated, or that the mega auction from two years prior would be the last one. That is untrue, though, as Arun Singh Dhumal, the chairman of the IPL, has acknowledged the development.
“We will definitely have the mega auction where you can select three or four players and then form a new team,” Dhumal declared. That adds to its intrigue, and the format will persist.Given that newer talent is entering the market rather than coming from India and other nations, hopefully the mega auction will be as large and excellent as previous ones. Afghanistan and other teams have benefited as well since they were able to display their talent, Dhumal continued.
The Debate Over Mega Auctions in IPL
After two more teams were added a few years ago, there was a belief that the mega auction should end. Parth Jindal of the Delhi Capitals, among other owners, voiced his concerns, claiming that it disrupts team culture and camaraderie, particularly when you have to let go of players who developed their trade with a specific franchise, became well-known, and eventually played for India.

The mini-auctions, which take place annually ahead of the 2023 and 2024 editions, see the teams keep the majority of its players and release only 6-7 to fill in the holes left by the previous season and put them in a better position to contend for the championship. The opening match of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) will feature the reigning champion Chennai Super Kings against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday, March 22.
