IPL: AB de Villiers Calls it Not Only The Biggest Cricket League, But The Biggest Sports League

AB de Villiers, a former South African international and player for the Royal Challengers, described the Indian Premier League as the largest sports league globally, in addition to being the largest cricket league.

This Friday, March 22, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai, the 17th Indian Premier League will get underway with a big match between the reigning champion Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“It [the IPL] certainly is [the centerpiece of cricket],” remarked AB de Villiers. Over the years, it has gotten stronger and stronger. Not only is it the largest cricket league globally, but it’s also among the largest sports leagues, which is very amazing to have accomplished in such a short amount of time. It has truly taken off in the last several years.

“The players become household names because of their outstanding performances. Additionally, a few of the international visitors learn a little bit more about Indian culture and become well-known locally. That makes it really amazing. It’s a fantastic chance for administrators, players, and other participants to become involved. The South African added, “I believe cricket fans have really loved it over the years.

AB de Villiers on Joining JioCinema’s IPL 2024 Commentary Team

De Villiers, who retired from international cricket in 2018 and the IPL in 2021, will be part of JioCinema’s commentary team for IPL 2024 and said he is looking forward to ‘a lot of fun’ during his commentary stint.

“Well, we have an amazing crew over at Jio Cinema. I therefore truly feel at home. That it’s not an individual sport is a big plus. We had a great time, and it’s good to have teammates around. That’s another one of our advantages over there. We continue to play cricket. Even now, it seems like I was only playing yesterday. Thus, that is also how we offer commentary. We truly provide the audience and supporters with a small glimpse into what it’s like to experience those times, the moments of pressure, what it’s like to be in the locker room, and what it feels like to both win and lose. And in my opinion, that’s what truly makes it,” he remarked.
