IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians Sign England Pacer Luke Wood as Replacement for Injured Jason Behrendorff

IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians Sign England Pacer Luke Wood  as Replacement for Injured Jason Behrendorff

Luke Wood, an English bowler, has been signed by Mumbai Indians of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to fill in for injured Jason Behrendorff during the upcoming season. Wood signed for a basic salary of approximately $62,000 (INR 50 lakh). In his career, he has participated in 140 Twenty20 matches, five of which have been for England.

Wood replaces left-arm Behrendorff with a similar player. The Englishman will be participating in his maiden IPL match, despite having previously participated in a number of T20 competitions throughout the globe, such as the Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League, and Bangladesh Premier League.

In all T20 formats, Wood has claimed 147 wickets at a strike rate of 18.3, an economy of 8.45, and a high of 5/50. He is anticipated to add strength to the five-time champions’ somewhat depleted fast bowling unit.

Prior to the season, which is scheduled to begin on March 22, Mumbai has suffered numerous injuries. MI’s current match-fit fast bowling lineup is Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Madhwal, Nuwan Thushara, and Arjun Tendulkar.

Injury Concerns and Recovery Updates for Mumbai Indians

After fully healing from the ankle injury he suffered during the 2023 ODI World Cup, newly appointed captain Hardik Pandya will also be available as an option alongside them. Another seam-bowling all-round player on the team is West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd.

Among the wounded are Gerald Coetzee, a young player from Protea, who is recovering from an inflamed pelvis, and Dilshan Madushanka of Sri Lanka, who sustained an injury during the recent ODI series against Bangladesh.

In addition to bowlers, MI hitter Suryakumar Yadav is questionable for the team’s inaugural match on Sunday, March 24, against Gujarat Titans. After two surgeries to treat an ankle injury he suffered last year, Surya is now recuperating. The hitter is probably going to skip MI’s two practice matches prior to leaving for Ahmedabad.
