IPL 2024: David Willey Exits IPL for Personal Reasons, Matt Henry Joins Lucknow Super Giants
Due to personal reasons, England’s left-arm seamer David Willey has withdrawn from the current Indian Premier League (IPL). Matt Henry of New Zealand will take Willey’s position at the Lucknow Super Giants. Henry would pay his base salary of Rs 1.25 crores to join the Lucknow Super Giants.
Willey departed the game following the ODI World Cup in India last year, and he was not present for Lucknow’s IPL debut against the Rajasthan Royals this past week.
Willey played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2022 and 2023 Indian Premier League before joining the Super Giants via the auction last year. The left-arm seamer had also expressed weariness following over two months of travel after participating in previous T20 competitions including the Pakistan Super League (Multan Sultans) and ILT20 (Abu Dhabi Knight Riders).
Injury Concerns and Player Replacements in LSG
Following Mark Wood’s departure from Lucknow this season to manage his workload ahead of the T20 World Cup in June, Willey is the second England player to leave the team this season. Shamar Joseph, a West Indian pacer, took Wood’s place.
Henry is a fast bowler from New Zealand who has played for the Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings. So far, he has appeared in two Indian Premier League games, both for the Punjab Kings in 2017. In 25 Tests, 82 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 17 T20 Internationals so far, Henry has represented New Zealand.
