IPL 2024 Rule Changes: Two Bouncers per Over, No Stop Clock Yet, and More!

IPL 2024 Rule Changes: Two Bouncers per Over, No Stop Clock Yet, and More!

In contrast to the previous standard of only one allowed short ball, bowlers in the forthcoming 2024 IPL would be allowed to bowl two bouncers per over. Earlier in the 2023–24 domestic season, the BCCI first implemented this regulation for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). Two bouncers are allowed every over in Test and One-Day International (ODI) matches; however, T20Is strictly follow ICC regulations that allow only one short ball. Additionally, the BCCI has decided to keep the regulation that requires them to confirm a catch when a stumping referral is made during an IPL 2024 match. This ruling differs from ICC norms, which state that stumping calls are only reviewed by the on-field umpire. The BCCI will guarantee fairness to the fielding side by incorporating checks for catches before finalizing stumping decisions.

Non-stop clock

The teams will still be allowed to examine two balls in addition to wides and no balls, which was included as a feature last year. However, since the IPL decided not to implement the stop-time rule, there will be a noticeable change from the most current ICC playing conditions. This decision, which will not be applied in the IPL, was made permanent for white-ball international matches to ensure fast proceedings.

Smart Replay System

The announcement of a smart replay system in the next tournament edition arrived a few days ago. Two Hawk-Eye system operators will now be seated next to the TV umpire in the same room, providing direct input to improve decision-making speed and accuracy. This new system will use eight high-speed cameras that are placed strategically throughout the ground to take photos and give full visual data for precise assessments. According to ESPNCricinfo, this revised arrangement will render the TV broadcast director’s custom of serving as a go-between for the umpire and the Hawk-Eye operators obsolete.

The season kicks off on March 22

The rematch between the reigning champion Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Chepauk Stadium will be the main event of the upcoming season. Two of India’s greatest cricket players, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, will play their first competitive match during this encounter. In the 2023 Indian Premier League final, Dhoni played his farewell cricket match, helping his team defeat the Gujarat Titans. Since January of this year, Kohli has not played. The Indian cricket team, the Bengaluru Royals, announced a rebranding a few days before the match, removing the word “Bangalore” from their name.
