India’s T20 World Cup Squad: 10 Players Confirmed, Close Battle for Final Five Spots

Selectors from India are expected to argue over five positions when they convene later in April to choose a 15-player team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with ten players virtually certain to make the squad. The current IPL 2024 season will have a significant impact on who gets to fill the five open spots, but the selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, will have a difficult job ahead of them. The primary cause of this is the excessive number of applicants for the few available positions—four people are vying for the position of second wicketkeeper alone.

Other players with definite berths include Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav, in addition to skipper Rohit Sharma. For the remaining spots, particularly the second wicketkeeper, a competition is developing between several elite IPL players. Among the candidates to be Pant’s backup are Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Jitesh Sharma, and Dhruv Jurel.

Gill vs. Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, two young players, are vying for the position of backup opener in the World Cup, as rumors have claimed that the Indian selectors may pair Rohit and Kohli to open the innings. Although Jaiswal hasn’t had a great IPL season so far, he has a stellar prior record. While Gill has been running well, he will need to maintain consistency to keep ahead of Jaiswal throughout the race.

Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravi Bishnoi are vying for the reserve position, with Kuldeep and Jadeja being the first-choice spinners. Due to his batting and defensive abilities, Axar has a slight advantage over his two adversaries. Even though Chahal is the most skilled bowler out of the three, if history is any guide, he may wind up falling short once more.
